Jasmine rice is a type of long-grained rice with a sweet and floral aroma, hailing from Thailand. Thanks to its sweet flavour, it has become popular around the world. It is easy to cook and versatile, and has a slightly sticky texture when cooked. In Asian cuisine it can be found in dishes such as curries and stir-fries.
One quarter cup serving contains approximately 35 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat. Like other types of rice it is low in fat and an excellent source of energy. It also contains important nutrients such as folate, selenium, manganese and iron.
Folate is particularly important during pregnancy, while selenium is important for thyroid health. Manganese has strong antioxidant properties and may protect the body against inflammation.
Rich in antioxidants, jasmine rice may fight free radicals and protect against cell damage.
To cook, boil one cup of jasmine rice and 1.5 cups of water, then simmer for another 15-20 minutes.
