Our bulgar wheat is from durum wheat. It is the whole wheat that has been cleaned, par boiled, dried and ground into particles, making the product quick cooking.
It is commonly used in middle eastern cooking and has a slightly nutty taste. It is a high fibre food as it is a complex carbohydrate which keeps you fuller for longer.
A half cup of boiled bulgur wheat provides:
Fiber: 4 grams
Protein: 3 grams
Sodium: 5 milligrams
Fat: 0 grams
Cholesterol: 0 gram
Carbohydrates: 17 grams
Bulgar wheat also contains the following minerals and vitamins: Iron,Folate, Vitamin B6, Niacin, Manganese, Magnesium
As bulgar wheat is a wheat it does contain gluten.
How to prepare bulgar wheat:
1 cup of bulgur wheat
1½ cups of water
1 tsp of olive oil
A pinch of salt
After you have your ingredients:
Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
When the water is nearly at a boil, cover and reduce the heat to low.
Cook for 12 minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat and let it stand covered for 10 minutes.
Serve the bulgur as a side dish or use it in your favorite recipe in place of brown rice.
